The gap between a working demo and a paying customer is larger than most founders expect. Here's a practical checklist.

Before you charge money

  1. Automated backups with tested restore
  2. Error monitoring and alerting
  3. Terms of service and privacy policy
  4. Payment provider webhooks with idempotency
  5. Rate limiting on public endpoints
  6. Database migrations in CI
  7. Staging environment mirroring prod
  8. Logging with correlation IDs
  9. Health check endpoint for load balancer
  10. Secrets rotation plan
  11. On-call runbook (even if on-call is you)
  12. Data export for user offboarding

A paying user expects reliability. A demo user expects novelty.

Cross off items before you send the first invoice.
